Chapter 16
Amelia spent the time between Thanksgiving and Christmas going through the motions of her new routine; her life alone in the apartment and school. She kept her weekends busy to make the time fly and focused on school during the week. The time alone at the apartment each night went from lonely and long to routine and comforting. She had a set day for grocery shopping on Sunday nights. She did laundry when she got home early on Tuesdays. She cleaned the place on Thursdays after dinner. She cooked for herself instead of eating out each night. School work, a glass of wine or beer and a show or two online, or on tv, kept her nights full. She didn’t mope around like she had in the early weeks before Thanksgiving. She didn’t feel so much as if there was something missing. She got to a point of valuing the silence and alone time. Of course, talking with Spencer a few nights a week helped one hour pass into the next also.
Once she finished her classes, her first semester of law school, she went home for Christmas. Between her parents, shopping and texting a great deal with Spencer’s family, Amelia felt almost too busy. Her Christmas came and went as did New Year’s without too many tears, sleepless nights, or too many moments of self-pity, or missing him with a crushing sense of loneliness. Natalie told her it was normal, a new normal, and everyone reaches that point. She told Amelia they all get to a moment or day when they’ve been doing it all alone for so long, successfully doing it, that they don’t think anything is missing. They feel self-assured and capable of handling any emotion, crisis, or daily obstacle without even thinking how they wish the other was there to handle it. They get to a point where they lay on the couch and drifted off to sleep without feeling like an arm or leg around them is missing. The craving for the presence of the other actually fades. Natalie called it self-preservation of sorts. The body and mind adjust to the new normal and help you go through the motions without a constant longing.
Spencer was right. Once the holidays were over and Amelia turned that calendar, she was shocked how quickly it all went and how his homecoming was fast approaching. She only had three more weekends alone before he’d be back. While she wasn’t told which day until a day or two beforehand, she knew the week he would be returning if all went according to plan. Once she realized it was close, it was as if her body and mind started to awaken to what she was missing. She had a few more dreams about making love to him. She found herself day-dreaming more about him in class than she had when he first left. She started to feel her pulse quicken and her heart jump when she’d think about his first night back in their bed.
